Tart cherry may help promote sleep in those who suffer from sleep difficulties. A randomized, double-blind, two-week crossover design study found an association between tart cherry juice consumption and improvement in sleep measures, such as sleep onset and total sleep time. The study included 43 otherwise healthy participants with some level of insomnia. The participants reported positive benefits with regard to sleep continuity in their subjective report log during the two-week trial. Study authors noted a modest improvement in older adults with sleep challenges, but noted further study is warranted. The small sample size and subjective measurements were noted only as limitations.
